Paestum: Temple of Poseidon

Paestum: Temple of Poseidon (photo: Athena Review 2003)

This large Doric temple (80 by 200 ft), near the earlier Temple of Hera, was once thought a shrine to Poseidon, titular deity of  Paestum. Later discovery of many votive figurines of Hera, however, show it was in fact a second temple of the goddess.

It is dated at ca. 460 BC, based on similarities with the temple of  Zeus at Olympia, known to be finished in 457 BC. Much of the original Doric temple, which was never restored, remains intact, including all columns.
