Paestum: patera or offering bowl (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo Athena Review 2003)

This terracotta vessel is a patera or votive offering bowl. It is sectioned like a pomegranate or other fruit, and includes molded reliefs of acanthus leaves and lotus buds.

This object  was most likely associated with votive offerings to the goddess Hera. who is shown in figurines variously holding pateras, lotus flowers, and pomegranates.
