Paestum: Assteas, vase with scene of Orestes (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo Athena Review 2003)


This lekythos was found inTomb 2 of the Gaudo necropolis at Paestum, in 1957 excavations. The painter is identified as Assteas, who worked at Paestum from 360-340 BC, and signed 7 of his pots. He was a leader of the Paestum school of vase painting. This vase is dated at about 350 BC.

The painting shows a scene of ritual purification of Orestes at  the sanctuary at Delphi. Names of the participants are inscribed, with Orestes seated in the center.
