Paestum: Covered bowl with scene from Orestes (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo Athena Review 2003)

This late 4th century BC lekani or covered bowl was found in Tomb 5 of the Laghetto necropolis at Paestum, excavated in 1954. The painting on the cover is from the local school of painters at Paestum which formed in the mid-to- late 4th c. BC. The bowl dates from about 330 BC.

The subject of the painting is a mythical scene related to Greek drama, showing an encounter between Orestes and Electra at the tomb of their father, with the Dioscuri also shown.
