Paestum: Hermonax, red figure vase of bacchante

Paestum: Hermonax, red figure vase (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo Athena Review 2003)

Hermonax, a student of the Berlin painter, was active from 470-440 BC. Ten vases are signed by him. Most of his work shows Dionysian themes, such as the man portrayed here who carries a wine jug and a walking stick.

About 150 vessels are known by Hermonax, including many red-figure lekythoi. This example, dated at 460 BC, was found in Tomb 317 in the Santa Venera necropolis at Paestum.
