Sele: Figurine of Hera seated on throne

Sele: Figurine of Hera on throne (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo: Athena Review 2003)

This marble statue of Hera shows the goddess wearing a chiton (fine linen blouse) covered by a peplos or shawl. She holds a patera or offering bowl in her right hand, and a pomegranate in her left hand.

The pomegranate, a symbol of fertility, is also associated with the cults of Demeter and Persephone. The patera or offering bowl is sometimes decorated with molded reliefs of lotus flowers and acanthus leaves.
