Paestum: Figurine of Hera with Bowl of fruit

Paestum: Figurine of Hera with bowl of fruit (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo: Athena Review 2003)

This figurine of Hera, from the southern sanctuary of Paestum, represents the goddess on a throne, with bowl of fruit. The figurine dates from the period of Lucanian domination of the city, beginning at the end of the 5th century BC. The Lucanians assimilated the cult of Hera, by then over two centuries old at the site.

In the Lucanian period, the most common votive images are of this type, showing Hera seated on a throne, her right hand holding a patera (a bowl signifying votive offerings), and in her left hand, a bowl of fruit.
