Sele: Silver disc with Hera inscription (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo: Athena Review 2003)

This early 6th century BC silver disc was found in the Southern Sanctuary at Paestum. The disk, which weighs just over a pound (570 gms), contains an engraved inscription in the Achean alphabet to the goddess Hera.

The inscription reads: "Sacred to Hera. Fortify the archers for us."

Hera was considered a protector of military activities,  as well as contests between young warriors including archers.
