Petra: Treasury [Khaznet Faroun], facade

Petra: Facade of Treasury [Khaznet Faroun] (photo: Bell Archive A-385)

Petra is located in southwestern Jordan. The site represents a unique complex of ancient temples and tombs carved into the sides of cliffs, dating from the Nabatean, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

This March, 1900 photo by Gertrude Bell shows the facade of the 1st century BC Khaznet Faroun, Arabic for  "the Pharoah's Treasury," the tomb of a Nabataean king. The facade, 30 meters high and 43 meters side, includes what Bell describes as "Nabathaean/Corinthian" capitals, as well as entablatures and friezes carved in a Late Hellenistic style.

The Gertrude Bell Archive is located at Newcastle University.
