Petra: Triumphal Arch

Petra: Triumphal Arch (photo: Bell Archive A-418)

Petra is located in southwestern Jordan. The site represents a unique complex of ancient temples and tombs carved into the sides of cliffs, dating from the Nabataean, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

This March,1900 photo by Gertrude Bell shows the remains of the 1st to 2nd century AD Triumphal arch. This arched gate lay at the western end of the Colonnaded Street, giving access to the Qasr Bint Far'oun Temple.

The Gertrude Bell Archive is located at Newcastle University.
