Machaerus: Satellite view and plan of Herodian fortress

Machaerus: Satllite view and plan of Herodian Fortress (Google Images; plan after Voros)

Machaerus is the site of a Herodian fortified royal palace in Jordan overlooking the Dead Sea. The Palace is flanked by a walled lower town and was provided with water by an aqueduct and a number of cisterns.

The fortress is described by the ancient historian Flavius Josephus in his Antiquities of the Jews ( XVIII, 5, 2)  as the place where  John the Baptist was imprisoned and executed by the Tetrarch Herod Antipas. In 2009-2012 The Hungarian Academy of Arts conducted surveys and excavations at Machaerus.
