Jerash: Southern Theater and Oval Plaza

Jerash: Southern theater (photo: Bell Archives A-377.)

Jerash was a major Hellenistic and Roman site in northern Jordan, with the western part of the ancient town now preserved as an archaeological monument

Jerash had two theaters, located at each end of the colonnaded cardo maximus or north-south avenue. This 1900 photo by Gertrude Bell shows a portion of the southern theater, with the oval plaza in the background, looking northeast toward the distant colonnades at upper left.

The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University.
