Jerash: Arch of Hadrian

Jerash: Arch of Hadrian  (photo: Blatchford Coll.)

Jerash, located 34 km north of Amman in north Jordan, was a major Hellenistic and Roman site. The site was first identified in 1806 and major excavations began in 1925-1934. The western part of the ancient town is now preserved as an archaeological monument.

Hadrian's arch, which lies 400 m south of the city walls, was completed in AD 130, just prior to a visit by the emperor Hadrian. It has a central passageway flanked by two lower passages. Both facades have four engaged Corinthian columns.

This late 19th century photo of the arch is in the Blatchford Collection.
