Amman [Philadelphia]: Amphitheater, east side

Amman [Philadelphia]: east side of the amphitheater (Butler 1907 v1, fg.33)

Amman, capital of Jordan, was ancient Philadelphia. After growing into a major settlement in the Hellenistic period, in AD 106-12 it became part of the new Roman province of Arabia.

South of the acropolis, a long colonnaded avenue ran along the north bank of a wadi which was vaulted as it flowed inside the walls. South of the wadi was the large open-air amphitheater and beside it the odeum, a smaller partly enlosed theater. This 1907 photo by Butler shows the east side of the amphitheater, viewed from within.
