Amman [Philadelphia]: Plan and section of Odeum

Amman [Philadelphia]: Plan and section of Odeum (Butler 1907 v1 fg.34)

Amman, capital of Jordan, was ancient Philadelphia. After growing into a major settlement in the Hellenistic period, in AD 106-12 it became part of the new Roman province of Arabia.

South of the acropolis, a long colonnaded avenue ran along the north bank of a wadi which was vaulted as it flowed inside the walls. South of the wadi was the large open-air amphitheater and beside it the odeum, a smaller partly enlosed theater This plan and section drawn by Butler shows the odeum in a restored view.
