Amman [Philadelphia]: The Odeum, viewed from southwest

Amman [Philadelphia]: View from southwest of the Odeum (Butler 1907 v1 fg.35)

Amman, capital of Jordan, was ancient Philadelphia. After growing into a major settlement in the Hellenistic period, in AD 106-12 it became part of the new Roman province of Arabia.

South of the acropolis, a long colonnaded avenue ran along the north bank of a wadi which was vaulted as it flowed inside the walls. South of the wadi was the large open-air amphitheater and beside it the odeum, a smaller partly enlosed theater. This 1907 photo by Butler shows the front of the odeum seen from the southwest.
