Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Wailing Wall (1899 photo)

Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Wailing Wall (Bell Archive NcU)

This photo by Gertrude Bell taken in 1899 shows a crowded group of worshippers grouped along the section of the western wall of the Temple Mount known as the Wailing Wall. Many of the worshippers in this scene are women.

The huge stone blocks in the wall dates from the time of Herod the Great (1st century BC). Niches in the stonework have been used to receive written prayers from the worshippers. Examples of grafitti are also visible along the wall.

The Gertrude Bell photo archive is at Newcastle University in England.
