Jerusalem: Temple Mount, excavations in SW corner (1868 photo)

Jerusalem: Temple Mount, PEF excavation in southwest corner (Warren, PEF Report 1868)

This photo shows an 1868 excavation by the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF), a 19th century British research unit, near the southwest corner of the Temple Mount. The specific excavation is perhaps that of sounding pit C22, as shown on the PEF map of underground structures. In the middle background is Robinson`s arch, a key archaeological marker on the western wall (arrows).

The PEF performed surveys, mapping, and test excavations at Jerusalem between 1865 and 1868, with most results published between 1868 and 1883. The PEF probes in this area uncovered early aqueducts, some from the Herodian period (30 BC-AD 70), and some perhaps earlier, as well as a paved Herodian street that surrounded the Temple Mount.
