Jerusalem: Temple Mount, SW wall with Robinson's Arch (1857 photo)

Jerusalem: SW Temple Mount, Robinson's Arch (Beato 1857/NYPL Archive)

This early photo taken by Antonio Beato in 1857 gives an overview of the southwestern side of the Temple Mount, with the El Aqsa Mosque at top center. Below, near the base of the wall, is the Herodian (30 BC-AD 70) feature called Robinson`s Arch (small arrows), considered a key archaeological indicator of the wall's construction sequence.

Beato`s prints on Jerusalem are archived in the New York Public Library (NYPL).
