Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Robinson's Arch  (1868 drawing)

Jerusalem: Southwest Temple Mount, Robinson's Arch (PEF Report 1873)

This 1868 drawing by the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF), a 19th century research unit of Great Britain, shows a significant feature at right called Robinson's Arch, located in the wall near the southwest corner of the Temple Mount, and named for its 1838 discoverer, Edward Robinson. The arch fragment on the wall supported an ancient causeway up to the Temple Mount.

The arch dates from the Herodian period (30 BC-AD 70) and helped identify Herodian components of the Wall. At left, the drawing also shows tunneling operations by the PEF.
