Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Double Gate & inscription (1930s photo)

Jerusalem: Double Gate with inscription (top photo:DAP/iaa. bottom drawing: de Vogue 1930s)

Near the Double Gate (shown in the photo at top) is a reused marble slab with an inscription, that came from a statue of the emperor Antoniunus Pius. The Latin inscription (placed upside-down, and with the usual abbreviations) reads TITO AEL HADRIANO/ ANTONINO AUG PIO/ P P PONTIF AUGUR/ DD

Translated to English, it reads: "To Titus Aelius Hadrianus / Antoninus Augustus Pius /The father of the fatherland, pontifex, augur / Decreed by the Decurions."

The photo at top of the Double Gate is from the 1919-1948 collection of the Palestine Dept. of Antiquities (DAP). The drawing at bottom of the inscription is by Melchior de Vogue.

These images are stored at the Israel Archaeology Authority  (www.iaa-archives.org).
