Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Double Gate (1865 photo)

Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Double Gate (photo: McDonald in Wilson 1865, PEF)

The Double Gate is one of three ancient gates in the south wall which date from the Herodian period (30 BC-AD 70). It is located below El Aqsa Mosque. The Double Gate is partly covered by a later wall built in the Crusader period (AD 1000-1250).

In this 1865 photo by McDonald of the British Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF), the right side of the arch of the Double Gate is partly visible (arrows), just over the person shown standing in the image.
