Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Gate of Cotton Market (1865 photo)

Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Cotton Market Gate (photo:DAP/IAA)

The Bab el Kattunin, or Gate of the Cotton Market, shown in this 1940s photo by the former British archaelogical unit, the Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP), is located on the west side of the Temple Mount. The gate leads out directly to the Suk el Katunnin or traditional Cotton Bazaar, built in the Mamluk period in 1337-8.

The photos from the 1919-1948 collection of the Palestine Dept. of Antiquities (DAP) are now stored at the Scientific Archive at the Israel Antiquities Institute (www.iaa-archives.org).
