This photo by Kitchener from 1874 shows exposed vaults and archways of the expansive hospital of St. John, built by Crusaders in the 10th-11th centuries AD. In the background is the Temple Mount, with the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque north porch both visible
Kitchener's photograph was part of a report by the 19th century British research group, the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF).
