Jerusalem: Detail of map on Madaba Mosaic

This detail from the mosaic in the Church of St. George in Madaba, Jordan is theearliest-known map of Jerusalem. The large floor mosaic, with some parts missing, orginally showed large portions of today's Israel, Jordan, and Syria.

Jerusalem is depicted as a Late Roman/Early Byzantine city with outer walls, colonnaded streets, a procurators house, and several churches including the Holy Sepulchre.
