Jerusalem: Jaffa Gate (1856 photo)

Jerusalem: Jaffa Gate (photo: Salzmann 1856/NYPL Archive)

This early view by Salzmann shows the western gate of Jerusalem, called both the Jaffa Gate, and Bab el Khalil (Hebron Gate) in Arabic. Along with the rest of the city wall, it was rebuilt in 1542 by the Ottoman ruler, Suleiman the Magnificent.

This salt print by Auguste Salzmann is one of 40 early photos on Palestine he published in 1856. Prints from this collection are in the New York Public Library (NYPL) archive.
