Jerusalem: Golden Gate (1899 photo)

Jerusalem: Golden Gate (photo: Bell Archive A104 NcU)

The Golden Gate, located on the east side of the Temple Mount, is thought to be where Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey on the Sunday before his death (Palm Sunday). Rebuilt in 1542 by Suleiman the Magnificent, the Gate has been sealed shut for centuries.

The space outside the gate is filled with Ottoman graves. Gertrude Bell`s 1899 photo shows details of stonework relief on the gate`s interior, including bricked-in portal arches with Corinthian columns.

The Gertrude Bell photo archive is at Newcastle University in England.
