Jerusalem: Golden Gate (1857 photo)

Jerusalem: Golden Gate (photo: Bonfils 1867-71/NYPL archive)

The Golden Gate, on the east side of the Temple Mount, is considered the gate by which Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The Gate was rebuilt in 1542 by Suleiman, and has been sealed shut.

This albumen print by Felix Bonfils from the late 1860s shows Islamic graves that were placed in front of the sealed gate.

Prints from this collection are in the New York Public Library (NYPL) archive.
