Jerusalem: Gate of Damascus (1856 photo)

Jerusalem: Gate of Damascus (photo: Salzmann 1856; NYPL archive)

The current walls and gates of Jerusalem were built by the Ottoman ruler Suleiman the Magnificent in 1538-1542. These revised the much earlier walls dating from Herod the Great's reign, later expanded in Byzantine, Achmaenid, Crusader, and Ottoman times.

The north-facing Damascus gate is one of several which are permanently open. This early view by Salzmann shows high banks still covering the lower sides of the Gate.

This print by Salzmann is one of 40 early photos on Palestine he published in 1856. The Salzmann photos are in the New York Public Library (NYPL) archive.
