Jerusalem: Cotton Market (1940s photo)

Jerusalem: Cotton Market (DAP/iaa)

The cotton market or bazaar (Suq al-Qattanin) was built by the Mamluk Sultan al-Malik al-Nasir Muhammad in 1337-1338 to replace an older building. It is located just west of the Haram esh Sharif or Temple Mount, through a monumental gate called Bab al Qattanin

This photo of the Cotton Market, dating from the 1940s, is from the 1919-1948 collection of the Palestine Deptartment of Antiquities (DAP), now stored at the Scientific Archive at the Israel Antiquities Institute (www.iaa-archives.org).
