Jerusalem: Church of St. Anne (1856 photo)

Jerusalem: Church of St. Anne (Salzmann 1856/NYPL Archive)

Located just north of the Temple Mount by the Pool of Bethesda, the Church of St. Anne has a well-preserved facade built during the Crusader period (ca. 1000-1260 AD).

This early salt print by Auguste Salzmann shows the portal and facade of the church, which is traditionally considered to contain the tomb of the Virgin Mary.

This is one of 40 early photos on Palestine published by Salzmann in 1856. Prints from this collection are in the New York Public Library (NYPL) archive.
