Jerusalem: Al Aqsa Mosque, plan of 1938-42 excavations (DAP)

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa, plan of 1938-1942 testing (after Hamilton 1942;Athena Review Image Archive)

This plan shows the area of testing in the Al Aqsa Mosque by the Palestone Department of Antiquities (1938-1942). The earliest evidence found under the Aqsa floor included:

 a)  A marble pavement buried 80 cm which is identified with the initial mosque (Aqsa I), dated ca. AD 710.

b) Part of an early wall, linked to the 1st and 2nd building phases (Aqsa I and II).

c) The 3rd buried feature was a series of mosaic floor remnants buried beneath a row of columns within the oldest part of the mosque. These are of Byzantine style and may possibly predate Aqsa I.

The Palestine Dept, of Antiquities (DAP) documented al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R.W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are stored in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
