Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic buried beneath Pier 9

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic beneath Pier 9 (Photo: DAP 20-979/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-979) shows a section of the mosaic found under Pier 9. This mosaic has different patterns than the diamond-shaped motifs of Piers 3 and 6. Here, at bottom, overlapping waves or scales containing small rhomboidal elements are separated by thin parallel bands from a distinct pattern of  interlocking lines, seen at the top of the image.

The interlocking pattern at top may be a border motif. The mosaic pattern in adjacent pier 12, located 10-12 meters to the north, appears similar to this. These patterns also represent typical design elements in Late Roman and Byzantine floor mosaics.

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
