Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic buried beneath Pier 6, profile

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, profile of mosaic beneath Pier 6 (Photo: DAP 20-944/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-944) shows a section of the bedding under the Pier 6 mosaic, which includes a thin layer of sandy cement bonding the tesserae, underlain by a thin stratum of pebbles. This is like the bedding of the Pier 3 mosaic, located 10-12 meters to the south in the nave, which also has the same diamond motif design. The stylobate of pier 6 is in the upper left hand corner of the image.

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
