Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic buried beneath Pier 3 (DAP)

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic beneath Pier 3 (Photo: DAP 20-941/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-941) shows a section of earlier floor mosaic buried beneath Pier 3 in the Al Aqsa nave.

Of the five nave piers aligned in a north-south row where mosaics were found, Pier 3 is the furthest south, located near the Al Aqsa Dome. The mosaic portion revealed under Pier 3 has a diamond-shaped pattern, with each element about 70 cm wide and containing a smaller diamond.

This pattern, also seen at Pier 6 about 12 meters further north in the nave, resembles that in many late Roman and Byzantine floor mosaics.A stylobate or platform edge for Pier 3 is seen in the foreground..

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
