Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic on Balat Pavement under Pier 30

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic on Balat pavement under Pier 30 (Photo: DAP 20-223/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-223) shows  a small patch of mosaic near Pier 30 in the nave of Al Aqsa Mosque, which overlies a section of the so-called balat pavement (meaning paved path), which also occurs in the Crusader-built vaults to the east of the mosque.

This mosaic remnant may be comparable to the patches of mosaic seen at Pier 15, where no pattern was discerned. Both may be associated with a nearby drain, and may postdate the lower balat pavement.

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
