Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic buried beneath Pier 12

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic beneath Pier 12 (Photo: DAP 20-977/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-977) shows a portion of the mosaic found under Pier 12. This mosaic has a pair of intersecting, wavy lines bordered by thin parallel bands. This matches part of the pattern seen in adjacent Pier 9, located 10-12 meters to the south.

This indicates that the area between Piers 9 and 12 was either a separate room from that around Piers 3 and 6, or a different section of a large hall, such as in a basilica or dining hall.

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
