Jerusalem: Al Aqsa Mosque, Wooden tie beams after roof removal

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa, wooden tie beams viewed from roof (DAP photo 18-412+5/IAA)

This image (DAP 18-412) shows the wooden tie beams from above, after the removal of the roof of the nave of Al Aqsa Mosque

While the lower surface of the beams visible from the nave had been painted, the upper portion revealed previously unseen old carvings, providing clues as to where the beams had been obtained in the building of the Mosque.

The Palestine Dept, of Antiquities (DAP) documented al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
