William Mathews Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) was a British archaeologist and a pioneer in Egyptian archaeology, where over several decades from 1880-1920 he employed innovative methods of sound field and lab methods and influenced generations of younger archaeologists.

His first major project in Egypt was to accurately map the pyramids at Giza. During this project he used a rock tomb shown in the photo as a dwelling.  His companion in the photo is not named.
