Francis Frith was a pioneering British photographer who used the collagen emulsion process under difficult conditions, to create a series of outstanding photos in Egypt in 1857-1860. His photographs from archaeological sites in Egypt and the Near East were first published in 1862. These consistently demonstrated a high quality of detailed photographic recording at archaeological sites.

Frith later produced a series of documentary photographs in the British Isles.
