Map of Fayum sites with Graeco-Roman papyrus documents

Sites in Fayum with Graeco-Roman papyri (data from The Fayum Project)

Masses of Graeco-Roman papyrus documents have been found in certain Fayum towns by archaeologists, beginning in the late 19th century with W. M. Flinders Petrie, Bernard Grenfell, and Arthur Hunt. These documents include everything from private letters to official documents and copies of literary and religious manuscripts, and constitute major historic and literary sources.  Large collections have been published since 1895 from Oxyrhynchus, Tebtunis, Hawara, Karanis, and Arsinoe (or Crocodilopolis). The numbers by each site indicate the number of papyrus documents recovered in each location since the early work of Grenfell, Hunt, Petrie and others began.

Green areas indicate land drained and irrigated by lakes and canals in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods (330 BC-AD 410). Lake Qurun (then called Lake Moeris) was larger than today.
