Sources de la Seine: Ex voto plaque with eyes and inscription

Sources de la Seine: Ex voto eye offering (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This small bronze plaque (5 cm long) with repousee work was found in Sources-de-la-Seine at the sanctuary for Sequana, goddess of the Rover Seine. The plaque, dating from the 1st-3rd century AD,  has a mask-like design of two eyes, and  the inscibed name MATTA.

Matta was a Gallo-Roman woman who gave the plaque as an ex-voto offering to Sequana, in order to cure an eye ailment.

The plaque is in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
