Dijon: carved head of an apostle, 13th c.

Dijon: Carved head of apostle (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This limestone head, originally part of a statue, is thought to represent a prophet. It was found in Dijon, but no more specific provenience is known. Based on its accomplished stylistic realism, it is dated to the the 13th century Gothic period.

The carving is now in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
