Gissy-sur-Ouche: Gallo-Roman statue of river goddess

Gissy-sur-Ouche: Gallo-Roman river goddess  (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

The female river deity named Sequana (Seine) portrayed in this statue was worshipped at a temple shrine at Gissy-sur-Ouche. The shrine was located near a spring at the sources of the river, believed to have healing power. Gallo-Romans pilgrims seeking cures placed votive images of their ailments at the shrine.

The carving is now in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
