Dijon: Castle Wall, Grave stela of a woman and a man

Dijon: Grave stela of woman and man (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This fragmentary Gallo-Roman grave stela from the Castle Wall in Autun, carved in deep relief, shows a woman within a shrine at left, and a larger male figure at right. It is possible that the scene represents a grieving husband whose wife predeceased him.

This sculpture was one of many removed from its original funerary context and reused in building the medieval defensive wall around Autun. The sculpture is in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
