Dijon: Grave stela of a horse trader

Dijon: Grave stela of horse trader (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This 2nd-3rd century AD Gallo-Roman grave stela was found in the 19th century buried amid rubble near the Dijon castle wall. It has a particular descriptive value, in showing a horse trader as a prosperous-looking man, dressed in a native Gallic cloak, and holding a staff, often a sign of rank.

The stela is in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
