Dijon: Grave stela of a man dressed as a pilgrim (2)

Dijon: Grave stela of man as pilgrim (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This grave stela from the area of Dijon, whose exact provenience is unknown, portrays a well-carved figure of a man in a niche, dressed as a pilgrim, carrying a spare cloak over his shoulder and a purse in his right hand. This is a common motif in Gallo-Roman funerary reliefs, with other examples known from both Dijon and Autun.

The sculpture is in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
