Saint Benignus (Benin), considered the apostle of Burgundy, traveled to Roman Gaul (today's France) to preach the gospel with two companions, about the start of the reign of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161).

They went first to Autun (Roman Augustodunum), then a major town. After preaching in various places in Burgundy, Benignus and his two companions were martyred at Dijon in AD 178, being killed by lances.

This mode of martyrdom is reflected in this statue of St. Benin in the Cathedral..
