The tomb of St. Benin (St. Benignus) is located in a colonnaded enclosure near the entrance to the crypt.

Saint Benignus, considered the apostle of Burgundy, is said have been a pupil of the Roman church father named Polycarp, who sent him to France to preach the gospel. He travelled there with two companions about the start of the reign of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161).

They went first to Autun (Roman Augustodunum), then a major town. After preaching in various places in Burgundy, Benignus and his two companions were martyred at Dijon in AD 178, being killed by lances.

In AD 512 the abbey of St. Benignus was erected over the tombs of these martyrs (McClintock and Strong 1891, Cyclopedia of Bbiblical literature, vol.11. p. 433).
