Abbot William of Volpiano directed the bulding of St. Benin's Romanesque rotunda and its adjacent basilica  from AD 1001 to 1018, He introduced certain Lombard features such as alternating piers, arched corbel courses, and superimposed arcades.

The 3-story rotunda has now been reduced to its crypt,  but Romanesque capitals survive adjacent to the burial place of St Benin. Some show figures praying; others may represent souls at All Souls Day ceremonies.
